A Cat’s Crying-Asif Khan

In the distant vicinity of an urban locale,

a cat’s crying is heard, restlessly persistent,

clear enough to make a loud impression on vague hearts,

stagnant, like paper boats stuck among reeds

in a mercilessly flowing stream.

And then the call for prayers rises from

the tall minaret of a nearby mosque.

I imagine efficient prayers offered by trembling hands,

prayers for a busy humanity,

sick and suffering.
