Question:
Tell us the Sunnah practices, supplications, and Wazaif for protection from the Evil Eye and for removing the Evil Eye!
Answer:
Several methods for protection from the Evil Eye and for removing its effects are mentioned in the blessed Ahadith:
1: Recite Surah Al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, Al-Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas), and the following supplication:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَ هَامَّةٍ ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ.”(اسوۂ رسول اکرم ﷺ)
2: If a person is affected by the Evil Eye, they should be treated with Ruqyah using the following blessed statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
“بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ اَللّٰهُمَّ أَذْهِبْ حرَّهَا وَبَردَهَا وَوَصْبَهَا”
Translation: In the name of Allah. O Allah, remove its heat and cold, and take away its pain and suffering. After that, recite the following words:
“قُمْ بِـإِذنِ اللّٰهِ”
Translation: Stand up by the command of Allah. (Hassan Hussain)
3: Another method for removing the Evil Eye is that if it is known who has caused the Evil Eye, that person should perform ablution (Wudu). The water used for the ablution should be collected in a container, and the person affected by the Evil Eye should then bathe with that water. The method for this is mentioned in the blessed Ahadith. Below is the narration from Mishkat al-Masabih along with its explanation:
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he said:
“The Evil Eye is real. If there were anything that could precede Divine Decree, it would be the Evil Eye. And when you are asked to wash, then wash.” (Muslim)
The words, “And when you are asked to wash,” mean that it was the custom among the Arabs that when a person was affected by the Evil Eye, the one who had caused it would wash his hands, feet, and the private parts of his body. That water would then be poured over the person affected by the Evil Eye, and it was regarded as a means of healing. At the very least, it helped remove the patient’s doubts and anxiety. Therefore, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted this practice and said that if your Evil Eye affects someone and you are asked to wash your limbs so that the water may be poured over the affected person, then you should comply.
Another narration also states:
Hazrat Abu Umamah (RA), the son of Sahl ibn Hunaif (RA), narrated:
One day, Amir ibn Rabi’ah (RA) saw my father, Sahl ibn Hunaif (RA), taking a bath (while his private parts were covered). He said, “By Allah, I have never seen such a beautiful body as I have seen today, nor have I seen the skin of a secluded virgin more delicate and beautiful than his.”
Abu Umamah said that as soon as Amir made this remark, it seemed as though Sahl had been struck down. He immediately fell unconscious. He was then taken to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it was said:
“O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What treatment do you recommend for Sahl? By Allah, he is not even able to lift his head.”
After seeing Sahl’s condition, the Prophet ﷺ asked:
“Do you think someone has afflicted him with the Evil Eye?”
The people replied:
“Yes, we think Amir ibn Rabi’ah (RA) has cast the Evil Eye on him.”
The narrator said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then called Amir, strongly reproached him, and said:
“Why would one of you try to kill his brother? Why did you not pray for blessing for him? (If you admired Sahl’s body and appearance, why did you not say, ‘Barakallahu ‘Alayk’ (May Allah bless you), so that your gaze would not affect him?)”
The Prophet ﷺ then instructed Amir to wash himself for Sahl. Amir washed his face, hands, elbows, knees, the tips of his toes, and the area beneath his lower garment into a container. The water used for washing these body parts was then poured over Sahl.
As a result, Sahl immediately recovered and stood up to walk with the people as if nothing had happened to him.
(Sharh al-Sunnah, Muwatta Imam Malik)
It should be understood that this type of treatment relates to matters of divine wisdom and hidden realities that are beyond the reach of human reason and understanding. Therefore, engaging in rational debate about it is of no benefit.
