Part 2 of Lucy Hattersley’s brilliant tutorial on retro games consoles is now available. For those who didn’t get the tutorial, homearcadecenter.Com part one is available here. RetroPie is able to boot into EmulationStation it’s the interface that you start with.
The current display shows only RetroPie. It is this feature that allows you to set up the emulation options. If you add games to RetroPie, other systems will be displayed in EmulationStation. To start the configuration window choose RetroPie
and then press the A button. Utilize the D-pad to scroll through the options, and then select WiFi. You’ll get the following message “You don’t have your country of WiFi set… ‘. To confirm, press the D-pad to the left, then press A. The interface will open raspberry-config. It’s best to switch your keyboard to use this interface instead. Choose 4 Localisation Options and then press the right arrow key on the keyboard to highlight Select, then press Enter. Select 4 Change Wi Fi Country to select the country you wish to be in. We selected GB Britain (UK). Select OK, then hit Enter to select it. Then, move to the right two times, select Finish and press Enter. The system will be restarted. A Ethernet cable can be used to connect to your modem or router or network, if you have the Raspberry pi with an Ethernet connection. It is likely that you’ll connect your Raspberry Pi to an LAN wireless network, so that you can connect to it even when it’s under your TV. Return to RetroPie from EmulationStation and scroll down to the WiFi setting; choose Connect to WiFi network. The window will show an array of nearby wireless network. Choose the network that you prefer and use the keyboard to enter the wireless login password. When you are done entering the password, press Enter. To go back to the interface of RetroPie you can exit the interface by selecting the Exit button. Select RetroPie Setup, and then Configuration Tools. You’ll find many useful tools within this window. Since we’re using a USB gamepad that’s not required, we’re not using the Bluetooth settings however it’s important to note that they’re present. It’s time to turn on Samba so we can transfer files from our PC directly to RetroPie. Choose Samba and Install RetroPie Samba shares, after which select OK. Choose Cancel to save to the Choose an option screen, before returning to the retroPie-Setup script. Select Update RetroPie-Setup script, and then press Enter. Once the script has been upgraded, you’ll be back in the Notice window. Enter and choose Basic installation. Enter, press Enter and then select Yes. The installation will begin and the configuration script will be run. When the script has finished it is time to reboot and Yes. Samba is used to transfer a file, known as a “ROM” (a videogame image) from the computer to RetroPie. Samba was previously installed as an option on Windows. In Windows 10, click on the Search bar and type in ‘Control Panel’. The search results will appear choose Control Panel. Now click Programs and Turn Windows features off or on. Make sure to check the box labeled SMB 1.0/CIFS Client. Click OK. This will allow Samba client support to be activated on your Windows 10 computer so that it will be able to access Raspberry Pi. More details on how Samba operates on the MagPi’s site. Open a web browser using your Windows PC or Mac and go to the Blade Buster website. This is a homebrew-based video game developed by High Level Challenge for old NES systems. The developer’s site on Japanese by clicking on BLADEBUSTER Download. To save the ROM files to your Downloads folder, Don’t extract the file. Click on Network to see a RETROPIE file. Open it and locate the roms folder. Double-click the roms folder and you’ll discover folders for a variety of classic systems. Press the Start button on the gamepad to display the Main Menu. Select Quit to restart EmulationStation. There’s now a Nintendo Entertainment System option with 1 Games available under it. 20120301 – this game is Blade Buster. To start the game Press A. Enjoy shooting aliens. Once you’re done you can press Start and Analog together. This will bring you back to EmulationStation’s game selection. If you’ve set up RetroPie on your screen this is the perfect time to move it to your main television. RetroPie will boot up and connect to the network. Then you can transfer ROM files to it via either your Mac or PC. It is possible to see black borders appearing on the screen during this time. For more details read the Fix the borders tips. Enjoy your gaming system! Certain games were developed for lower resolutions which is why increasing their resolutions can make them look like a blocky image on contemporary televisions. If you’d like to change the resolution, choose ‘RetroPie setup’. Start raspi-config. There’s a variety of other resolution options to pick from. These are caused by overscan. Select RetroPie from EmulationStation or raspi-config. Overscan is disabled and you can choose No on the ‘Would you like us to make it possible to compensate displays that overscan? ‘ window. Select OK and then finish. Choose Yes in the Reboot Now window. When the system has rebooted you will notice the borders have disappeared.
