How to Cook Ham for the Family Here are some tips

Baked Ham is my kids’ most-loved meal of all time! The turkey dinner you have on any holiday (or holidays) is worth the price for ham. The ham baked in this recipe is moist, tender and delicious inside . The outside is covered with the brown sugar glaze and caramelized to give a little sweetness. This baked ham is perfect for Christmas and Easter however, you can prepare it at any time of the year. Although I am a fan of turkey dinner, (mostly because I love stuffing), I am way ahead of all those who vote for the ham. Crock Pot Ham is something I often make because it’s so simple, but I have to admit that love the delicious roasted flavor of a ham baked. Baking a ham isn’t difficult, you simply need to watch the temperature to ensure it’s cooked without over cooking. Brown sugar glazes can be added to the baked ham in order to enhance it without over-sweetening it. Most hams you purchase are smoke-smoked, which is a sign that it’s been cooked. Look over the package to make sure the ham has been cooked. It should also mention the recommended cooking temperature. When cooking ham, you’ll need to pre-heat your oven and then put the ham cut-side down. To protect the ham from drying, wrap the ham in foil. Sprinkle the brown sugar glaze for ham prior to baking. This recipe calls for a bone in ham since bone-in ham provides the most delicious flavor and tender meat (plus we prefer to have bones from ham left over to cook our delicious Crock Pot Ham and Bean Soup). A bone-in fully cooked ham requires around 12-14 minutes for cooking for this recipe. A 9lb Ham will take approximately 2 1/4 hours. It’s easy to overcook the ham. In order to really make a perfect baked ham, I recommend using a thermometer such as this one. I own one and simply leave in the ham during the cooking process and check the temperature for the best results. It is also recommended to read a cooking guide on the box of the ham you purchase for cooking times but the most accurate method is to use a thermometer. This recipe utilizes my preferred Brown Sugar Glaze for Ham. It is made up of brown sugar, pineapple juice, and some orange juice. The glaze adds a wonderful sticky coating on the outside, and is delicious , but not too sweet. Since it helps it stick more tightly to the ham, I recommend adding a four minute extra to thicken it slightly. You can use dark or light brown sugar in this recipe, however darker brown sugar gives some extra flavor. Like everything that is high in sugars the brown sugar glaze will burn if it’s left too long in the oven , so it’s only added in the final 15 minutes. Once the brown sugar glaze is thickened and cooled, remove the ham from the oven. The heat is raised to high. The glaze is then applied to the ham. Within a couple of minutes, the high heat produces a beautiful golden glaze. Before carving your ham baked allow it to rest for 15 minutes to keep it perfectly moist. If you are cooking ham with bones, you’ll need around 3/4 pound per person. If you have leftovers (for Ham and Corn Chowder, Cheesy Ham or Potato Casserole) it will take a little more. An 8lb ham will feed about 9 people. The delicious brown sugar ham is typically served during Easter dinner or at Christmas dinner. For the perfect meal we serve it alongside our favourite sides! Combine dijon mustard and pineapple juice. If your ham has a disk of plastic on the bone, it must be removed and eliminated. The ham should be placed flat side down, in a roasting pan and then cover with foil. Roast for 12 to 15 minutes per pound (or as per the instructions on the package). Mix glaze ingredients together and bring to a boil. Lower heat and small propane grill (sau11.org) propane grill (sau11.org) simmer for 2-3 minutes. Apply glaze to the ham and return to oven until the glaze has cooked and the ham is at the safe cooking temperature.
